Greetings, Welcome to SOC 101!
This semester will be fun, informative and challenging.
Before you begin the course, I need you to complete the
following items below. I look forward to working with
you this semester as you begin your journey into
Sociology. --- Xeturah Woodley - Dept of
Sociology
Please
complete the following items:
1. Student readiness exercise.
Completing this exercise
will give you a sense of whether or not you are ready to
participate in an online course. Please be sure to
record your final score. You will be sending it to me as
part of item 6 below.
2.
Syllabus review.
After reading the syllabus, you should be better
able to tell whether this is the right section of Introductory
Sociology for you. There is a great deal of work in this
course including weekly assignments and quizzes. If you
do not have the time to do your best work, then this course is
not for you.
3.
Review the Sample Assignment.
This is an example of the assignments you are required to take
in the course. This should give you some idea of the work
that is expected of you during the semester.
NOTE: The quizzes are timed. That means you will
only have 15 minutes to complete a 20 question quiz. If
you are unable to test under time restrictions, then you should
register for another course
4. Top ten review.
This is a list of the top ten things
former students would want you to know about taking one of my
courses.
5.
Browser tune-up. The browser tune-up will update your web browser
to ensure that you have all of the browser accessories you
will need for the course. NOTE: You
DO NOT need
RASMOL or CHIME.
Also, only download and install the
FREE
versions of products if necessary.
6.
Register for WebCT. The next step is to register for your
WebCT account. To do so, follow the link on the left and
complete the online instructions for registering.
Now is
your opportunity to choose to either be in the course or to
drop this course. You now know what it required and what
is expected of you, should you choose to take this section of
Sociology 101. If you cannot honestly say that you will
put in the work required, then now is the time to drop this
section and take another Soc 101 section. If you can
honestly say, I am ready for this course, then please continue
to step 6.
7. Email me. Send me (xwoodley@tvi.edu) an
email message, which contains the following information: a. Your name, email address & the best number
to reach you.
b. Your student number. c. The course,
including section number and CRN, your are registered in.
d. Your readiness test score. e. Your WebCT username only (not your password). f. A brief statement about what
you hope to accomplish out of your participation in the
course. g. A brief statement about what concepts
you would like to see examined in the course.
Now make
sure you buy the textbook. You can get it from the
campus bookstore or at Amazon.
